Missed Your Day 3 Fertility Blood Test? What Can Still Be Tested?

Short answer: missing an early-cycle fertility blood draw does not mean every hormone test must wait until your next period. The next step depends on which marker was requested and why.

Why are some tests booked for days 2–4?

Clinicians often request FSH and oestradiol near the beginning of a menstrual cycle because their interpretation is tied to cycle phase. Sampling them at another time can make comparison with early-cycle ranges less useful. LH may also vary substantially through the cycle.

Can AMH be tested later?

AMH is comparatively less dependent on the exact cycle day than FSH or oestradiol, although factors such as hormonal contraception can affect results. It should not be interpreted as an individual guarantee of fertility or a standalone measure of egg quality.

What about progesterone?

Progesterone is used differently. A blood test to help establish whether ovulation occurred is often timed approximately one week before the expected period, not automatically on day 21. If cycles are longer or irregular, a clinician should tailor the timing. See our progesterone timing guide.

What should you do after a missed appointment or failed sample?

Contact the provider with the list of biomarkers and your cycle day. Ask which markers can still be collected, which need postponing and whether a different sampling method is suitable. If home finger-prick collection failed, discuss a venous blood draw at an approved collection service rather than repeatedly attempting painful collection without guidance.
