Can You Have Fertility Hormone Tests While Taking the Pill?

Short answer: some hormone tests can be performed while taking the pill, but results may be difficult to interpret as a picture of your usual cycle. Do not stop contraception solely to get a different fertility result without discussing pregnancy risk and your goals.

How can the combined pill affect results?

Combined hormonal contraception usually suppresses ovulation-related hormone activity. FSH, LH and oestradiol measured during use should not be treated as though they were taken during a natural early-cycle period.

What about AMH and antral follicle count?

AMH and antral follicle count are often used as ovarian reserve markers, particularly to help plan assisted reproductive treatment. ASRM notes that prolonged hormonal contraception may suppress both. A low result measured while using contraception may therefore need context or reassessment rather than an immediate conclusion about ovarian reserve. Neither result predicts an individual's chance of natural conception reliably.

Is the progestogen-only pill the same?

Not necessarily. Different hormonal methods have different effects on ovulation and bleeding. An implant, injection, hormonal coil and different pill formulations should not be assumed to produce identical patterns. Tell the clinician which method you use, how long you've used it and whether your cycles can be assessed naturally.

Should you stop the pill before testing?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. For some ovarian reserve questions, a clinician may discuss reassessment after a period without hormonal contraception. That plan needs to account for unintended pregnancy and why the test is being ordered. If you need contraception, ask about an alternative rather than stopping without a plan.
